Functional training is designed to improve our ability to function in everyday life– that is, multi-dimensional, weight-bearing movements that challenge our balance, stability and mobility. However, popular functional training tools like stability balls and wobble boards fall short because they improve our body functionally only if we are already in proper alignment.
Unfortunately, 95% of us are out of alignment because our natural alignment is compromised by modern-day habits like sitting for extended periods of time, carrying an oversized handbag, or hunching over a desk. Thus, these stability tools create greater dysfunction because when we are out of alignment, we compensate to remain stable rather than improve our stabilizing capabilities. By doing so, these stability tools can exasperate the very same bad habits they set out to correct.
Fluidity, on the other hand, begins and ends with correct alignment. By standing up in correct alignment and maintaining this alignment throughout each whole-body, weight-bearing movement, we create functional stability rather than improve our ability to compensate.
